The news of Carillion’s collapse last week came as no surprise. Having worked in construction, on and off, for years, there are plenty of anecdotes of their uncompetitively low bids, project overspends and the long and drawn-out payment of subcontractors.

As this red giant implodes, the fear is that its death spiral will take every orbiting entity with it, leaving a lifeless white dwarf at the centre and a depleted and entirely restructured galaxy. But perhaps this has to happen and, with time, a new, more balanced universal order will establish for the good of society.

Live long and prosper.
