Saw a man buy a homeless man a sandwich today. Lovely. But perhaps it’s patronising to give them anything but money, I thought. It assumes they’re incapable of spending it on what they consider they need most (even if it’s heroin). Perhaps the homeless are better placed to know what they need than the middle-classes. The homeless are acutely in touch with their base requirements whereas I’ve just spent £120 on a Kindle, which I won’t put in my bag should it get scratched.

An absence of disposable income must focus the mind, even amidst the throws of opiate addiction.
