Mowing the lawn is my time. I put on my headphones and for forty-five minutes, I’m more or less left to my own devices. Today, I listened to a TED Radio Hour episode about stress, depression and despair. It introduced me to the slow and calming voice of Andrew Solomon. His account of his experience of depression was considered, honest and comforting in a way. What particularly resonated with me was his assertion that the opposite of depression is not happiness, but vitality. A vitality I was glad to be experiencing as I cut the grass in the morning sun.
